Rose Schmidt recently completed a Community Project through her school, spending her school holidays and some weekends building two pest traps and 20 insect hotels for Awahuri Forest Kitchener Park near Feilding. Her father Tyson had heard about a need for more traps to deal with pests that invade this popular local park. Rose had been looking for an environmental project, and now rare remnant of lowland swamp forest has more protection for its indigenous flora and fauna. The insect hotels will provide a safe place for invertebrates such as Wētā. The traps will catch rats, possums and other pests that would feed on the eggs and nestlings of native birds in the coming spring.
